I’ve seen people buy a machine before they measure their yard, and they end up having to reconfigure their whole layout (or even sell the machine) because it doesn’t fit. But you need extra space behind the machine for the material to fall when you tip. How much extra? That depends on how high the truck bed is, but for most standard trucks, you need at least 4-5 meters of clear space behind the tipping platform to pile the unloaded material. If you don’t have that space, you’ll have to move the material with a front loader twice every load, which wastes time.

Then, you need space for the truck to drive onto the platform. Most of the time, trucks drive in from one side, tip, then drive out the other. That means you need at least 6 meters of clear space on the entry side for a standard 20ft truck, so the truck can maneuver and line up correctly on the platform. If you’re working with 40ft containers, you need 8 meters of entry clearance. If you don’t have enough entry space, the truck driver has to make multiple attempts to line up, which adds time to every unload.

Wait—what if you don’t have space for a through drive? Can you set it up so the truck drives in, tips, then reverses back out? Yes, that works, but you need more turning space for reversing.
